My Great Oilcloth Study-Experiment A

Hypothesis 1: It is possible to attach matte board to oilcoth using adhesive. Outcome: true. Problem: the only adhesive that works is Gorilla Glue, but it expands, becomes uneven underneath the material, and makes it look bumpy and unattractive. Otherwise, I LOVE Gorilla Glue for so many reasons!

Hypothesis 2: It is possible to machine sew matte board directly to the oilcloth. Outcome: true. Problem: material shifts and “walks” creating uneven edges. The inside of this isn’t nearly as pretty as I’d like.

This cute little “gift box” is from Simplicity Pattern #4320, “D” Shirley Botsford Designs. I made it as a purse, but I cannot legally sell it; to honor the copyright of the designer.

This was a tedious project, as is most of the work I do. Problems were solved and I may revisit this again in the future.

  1. Years ago, when I was working in the art world, we used an adhesive that rocked. We switched over to this after some paste-up boards made with waxed type fell apart into tiny pieces on its way to Japan.

Anyway, a quick google search found it still on the shelves. It’s 3M #568 Repositionable Mounting Adhesive. I think the Scotch company has its own version.

It comes on a roll and holds tight once burnished. It coats like spray adhesive without the aerosol mess. You might see if an art friend has a bit to loan you since it’s rather expensive for a trial.

It was so good, it was nicknamed “uckem pucky.”

  2. Abby—I love adhesives! I wrote a poem about them which I can share at some point.

I’ll have to check into this stuff. I am looking for the “perfect” adhesive for mounting paper to paper. YES paste is great, but if it gets warm it melts again, which I learned the hard way. 🙁

  3. Thank you, Rhonda!!! I’m working on staying positive through all this trial problem solving work. Yesterday I felt like, “Am I crazy to keep trying with this stuff? What am I doing?”

  4. Doh, 3M and Scotch are the same company!

You’re welcome to visit my blog … mainly day to day stuff, some art, though. I’ll add my “art world” stories there as they come to mind. They mostly consist of meeting some perpetual deadline, crazy hours, etc. Did you know I went to Uncle Pauly’s alma mater?

About my blog”S” … I kinda went crazy with them as you will see. I use an alias … chosen because I have several mulberry bushes in our backyard and the fact that our Grandma would always get so mad when the birds would get “mulberry poop” on her clean girdles hanging outside. It still makes me laugh.

The name of the main blog is my vice. : )

  5. Congratulations, lady on your bag’s morning show appearance. I just saw it on Rhonda’s blog yesterday. I would have taped it if I had known. I’m so excited for you. Maybe Oprah’s Favorite Things is next………..You go girl! Holly
